When retiring, many people take their Social Security benefits immediately, not realizing that waiting can significantly increase retirement income. Waiting until age 70 to take Social Security increases the benefit by 76% over taking benefits at age 62.
The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI.org), funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, has launched the campaign “When Should I Take Social Security Benefits?” to help Americans understand exactly what benefits they can expect to receive based on when they take them. Jill Braunstein, NASI Communications Manager, says “We want to get the word out. We aren’t saying not to take your benefits if you need them, but many people claim early because they don’t understand the payout guidelines or they simply don’t trust that Social Security will be there when they need it. We are trying to inform, educate and build confidence in the program.”
Before embarking on a comprehensive public education effort, NASI conducted extensive research and intensive review to ensure accuracy and non-partisanship. The campaign consisted of an informational video, produced in both English and Spanish, which was circulated via social media sites. To promote the program and the video, NASI worked with GO! Creative, LLC, to develop a toolkit consisting of an informational brochure, an abbreviated fact sheet and postcards. “With the print products,“ says Jill, “GO! Creative helped us put the message into an easy-to-understand format to which readers could relate.”
In addition, NASI conducted webinars and one-on-one meetings with financial advisors as well as placing paid articles. There were four partners involved in this project: the National Urban League, National Council of La Raza, Center for Rural Strategies and the National Women’s Law Center.
The most exciting part of the campaign was the major media coverage from MarketWatch. NASI received accolades from publications across the country, including: “Excellent guide to Social Security claiming decisions, ” Mark Miller, retirement columnist for Reuters, Morningstar and author of The Hard Times Guide to Retirement Security. “…provides straight-forward guidelines regarding your Social Security.” Steve Vernon, contributor to CBS MoneyWatch, consulting actuary, Research Scholar for the Stanford Center on Longevity, author of Money for Life: Turn Your IRA and 401(k) Into a Lifetime Retirement Paycheck and Recession-Proof Your Retirement Years.
The Sloan Foundation and other retirement research foundations see the need for Social Security benefit education and are committed to continue to provide funding to support NASI’s public education program.
Braunstein states, “We found there was a real hunger for information about when to make a Social Security claim—there was a lot of confusion. People really appreciate the information.”
